Growing Practices: Whitted Bowers is a Certified Biodynamic and Certified Organic farm. No synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or fungicides are used. We make extensive compost, use limited off-farm inputs and pay close attention to the moon and close planets. We use only open pollinated seeds when possible, save seeds from our own farm and raise nearly all of our own transplants (i.e., we don't buy them from a greenhouse). The only exception to this is strawberry plugs for which we purchase certified organic plugs. We make extensive use of herbal and compost based remedies designed to enhance soil vitality or enhance the plants' ability to metabolize light. We treat all compost with biodynamic preparations, herbal-based remedies that are applied in a homeopathic fashion. We use cover crops extensively with a goal of constantly improving the soil. All our fields are under strict crop rotation. We have designated on-farm plantings for native pollinators and strive to have as many native flora on the farm as possible. We are members of United Plant Savers and a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
