Carrboro Farmers' Market Memorial Scholarship in Memory of Gary Murray of Sunset FarmS
In 2013 the Carrboro Farmers’ Market established a scholarship fund for students of the Sustainable Agriculture Program at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro. The Market and its members have lead the way in supporting local agriculture and sustaining small farms in the area since the Market’s inception in 1979. CCCC’s Sustainable Agriculture Program shares in the Market's mission of fostering the growth of our local food system by supporting the next generation of farmers through education. Each year, the Market chooses to award the scholarship in memory of an outstanding and influential market member that’s has passed. In 2015 the scholarship fund will be in memory of Gary Murray of Sunset Farms.
Gary Murray of Sunset Farms was a member of the Carrboro Farmers’ Market for over 30 years. Gary passed away after a long battle with cancer in August 2013 at the age of 68. He will always be remembered as a devoted farmer. He was the third generation to occupy the family-owned Sunset Farms in Snow Camp, NC., and his love of farming and strong work ethic developed at a very young age. By the age of 12 he was already skilled a growing corn, beekeeping, and raising poultry. By the time he went off to college at N.C. State to earn a degree in agriculture, he was already the owner of a small herd of cows, which he had bought on his own while in high school.
His devotion, work ethic and loving personality inspired everyone around him. Gary was dedicated to learning and innovating, and over the years he transitioned the farm from conventional farming methods to sustainable practices. He passed on the love of farming and huge wealth of knowledge to his son Chris Murray, who took over Sunset Farms in 2008.
In addition to his hard work on the farm, Gary worked with the Alamance County Soil and Water Conservation District for over 20 years and also served for two years in the US Army.
Even as Gary’s health was failing, he would often attend Market with his wife Wanda or his son Chris, daughter in law Jamie, and his grandchildren. He was a loving family man, and he deeply enjoyed his time with his family and with fellow farmers and Market shoppers. He was very proud of his family and of what Sunset Farms had become. Gary and the whole Murray family are well known for their kind and genuine personalities, and we deeply miss seeing Gary’s smiling face at Market. Please consider honoring Gary’s legacy and passion for agriculture with a donation to our scholarship fund.
