People: John Ferguson
Mr. Ferguson is farming in his retirement because he truly enjoys it. He bought his land in 1985 and first planted apple trees in 1991. Since then he has found that Gala and Virginia Gold apples grow best in the Piedmont’s soil and climate. He is in his third year at the market, and he ran into former UNC President William Friday one Saturday shortly after joining. A few weeks after their meeting, he was delighted to find an autographed copy of Mr. Friday’s biography in the mail.
