Carrboro Farmers’ Market and Orange County Solid Waste Management partner to offer free food waste drop off pilot program for local residents and market attendees!

Starting June 18, 2016 the Carrboro Farmers' Market will partner with Orange County Solid Waste Management to offer a free food waste drop-off for local residents and Farmer’s Market attendees, continuing every Saturday market day through September! Participants can bring all food scraps (veggie scraps and all meat, bones and dairy too) and food related paper such as paper napkins and paper plates.  This is not your backyard compost—the collected organic waste will be composted through a commercial composting company—Brooks Contractors.

There is a catch—we can’t do this without Compost Collection VOLUNTEERS, to educate about the compost collection and monitor the collection carts. Volunteer shifts are each Saturday June 18- September 3 from 7am-9:30am and 9:30am-Noon. If you are interested in being a part of this exciting new program, please email Muriel Williman at

Please be advised that this is a pilot program!  Our volunteers will also help monitor the success of the program and help determine if it should be ongoing after the first few months.  June 18th will kick off the pilot with a big food waste awareness party!  There will be composting demonstrations, worm bin explorations, and people who pledge to participate in the pilot program will receive a free food waste collection bucket.
